Parashah Yitro (Shemot / Exodus 18:1–20:23)
Date: 24 Shevat 5781 (February 6, 2021) • Theme: From practical wisdom and just leadership to holy encounter and covenant, Yitro (Jethro) frames Israel’s calling and the revelation of the Ten Words at Sinai.
Jethro Arrives and Blesses HaShem
Jethro (Yitro), Moses’ father-in-law, hears what God did for Israel and comes with Zipporah and the boys. Moses recounts the wonders; Jethro blesses HaShem and offers sacrifices, acknowledging the God of Israel above all gods.
Wisdom for a Just System
Seeing Moses overwhelmed, Jethro counsels a structure of trustworthy, God-fearing leaders over thousands, hundreds, fifties, and tens. The goal is shared burden, swift justice, and shalom for the people.
Moses Listens and Leads
Moses heeds the counsel, appoints judges, and Yitro returns home. Torah honors wise advice that produces righteous order and rest.
Arrival at Sinai: A Kingdom of Priests
At the third new moon, Israel camps before the mountain. God pledges covenant love: “You shall be to Me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation,” if they heed His voice and keep His covenant.
Consecration and Theophany
The people consent to the covenant. After consecration, Sinai quakes with thunder, lightning, a thick cloud, and shofar blasts as God descends in fire. Awe and holiness frame revelation.
The Ten Words (Aseret HaDibrot)
God gives the Ten Words: exclusive loyalty to HaShem, no idols, honor His Name, keep Shabbat; honor parents; do not murder, commit adultery, steal, bear false witness, or covet. Covenant life is relational holiness before God and neighbor.
Holy Fear and Simple Altars
Trembling at the thunder and trumpet, Israel asks Moses to mediate. Moses says holy fear keeps them from sin. God prescribes simple earth or unhewn-stone altars—worship without self-exalting display.
Haftarah Yitro
Isaiah beholds the King, HaShem Tzva’ot. Purified by the coal, he is sent to a resistant people, yet promised a holy remnant and a Davidic child called “Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.” The God who shakes thresholds at glory also preserves His covenant plan.
Gospel Reading
The rich young man asks about eternal life. Yeshua answers with the commandments and the call to wholehearted devotion. “With God all things are possible”—covenant faithfulness is God-empowered.
Messianic Reflections
Jethro’s counsel models Spirit-led order; Sinai reveals God’s holy character in the Ten Words; Isaiah promises a royal Son who brings shalom; Yeshua calls us to covenant loyalty from the heart. As a “kingdom of priests,” we receive the Torah’s wisdom and live it for God’s glory.
